Soils of Great Salt Lake Wetlands: Hydric Indicators and Common Features

چکیده
Soil is much more than just dirt. Often called the “living skin of the planet Earth,” soil is a mixture of organic and mineral material, air, and water that is critical for the support of life [1]. Soil provides structure for plant roots, retains water to ensure plants have access long after it rains, and holds nutrients so they are available to organisms over time [1]. Soil is not material devoid of life, but a living ecosystem, home to billions of microorganisms and myriad small animals like worms, crayfish, and snails which combine with the forces of climate and Soils of Great Salt Lake Wetlands: Hydric Indicators and Common Features Christine Rohal, Karin Kettenring, Rebekah Downard, and Mark Larese-Casanova Department of Watershed Sciences, Quinney College of Natural Resources

Great Salt Lake Selenium Standard
The Great Salt Lake ecosystem is widely recognized to be unique and to have very high environmental and commercial value. Great Salt Lake is recognized regionally, nationally, and hemispherically for its extensive wetlands, and its tremendous and often unparalleled values to migratory birds. These values are derived from the lake’s unique physical features, including its immense size, dynamic w...
متن کاملPlant Species Indicators of Physical Environment in Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands
Plant taxa identified in 90 U.S. Great Lakes coastal emergent wetlands were evaluated as indicators of physical environment. Canonical correspondence analysis using the 40 most common taxa showed that water depth and tussock height explained the greatest amount of species-environment interaction among ten environmental factors measured as continuous variables (water depth, tussock height, latit...

متن کاملPartitioning vegetation response to anthropogenic stress to develop multi-taxa wetland indicators.
Emergent plants can be suitable indicators of anthropogenic stress in coastal wetlands if their responses to natural environmental variation can be parsed from their responses to human activities in and around wetlands. We used hierarchical partitioning to evaluate the independent influence of geomorphology, geography, and anthropogenic stress on common wetland plants of the U.S. Great Lakes co...
متن کاملThe ecological boundaries of semi-arid wetland using a protocol enhanced by bird indicators: The international Alagol wetland of Iran
Wetlands as water resources have a special place in the semi-arid plateau of Iran and boundary determination is necessary for their effective conservation and conflict resolution among stakeholders that are dependent on these resources. Determination of the wetland boundaries should be commensurate with environmental features affecting on it which normally extend beyond water extent. Ecological...
